Categories 2013
This category is for breakfast shows on stations with a potential adult audience (as measured by RAJAR-defined TSA, or MCA if not in RAJAR) of over 10 million.
Entries are invited from weekday or weekend breakfast shows.
Judges will be looking at the whole programme (music sequences, speech content, feature items, humorous inserts etc.) and seeking to reward shows that deserve particular recognition for their overall standard and relevance to their target audience at breakfast time, irrespective of format.
Judges’ Tip…
“Listen to a winning Breakfast Show entry and invariably they've captured the "Right Here Right Now" factor for that day; the thing their target audience are thinking and talking about that morning. It creates an ‘if I don’t listen, I won’t know and I’ll miss out’ feeling. That’s what gives a breakfast show the winning ‘must listen’ edge.”
What to do next…
All entries must be completed and submitted online. Please refer to Make an Entry for further details.
To be considered for this award, you’ll need to complete an entry form and upload the following audio:
ONE MP3 (up to 55 MB) ‘BEST OF’ COMPILATION to consist of a minimum of 6 extracts (lasting no longer than 45 minutes in total) to reflect the show’s best output from 2012.
Extracts must be separated by a fade into and out of a 1 second gap, so that it is clear to judges where each extract begins and ends. You will be asked to itemise the running order of extracts on the entry form.
Please note that telescoping in and out of music tracks, ad breaks and promos is permitted but all other content should be included in full, as broadcast.
Additional audio material such as specially recorded voice links or introductions is not permitted.
Requirements
The aim of these Awards is to recognise outstanding radio programming that has been created in the UK and is intended for UK, Channel Islands and Isle of Man listeners.
Entries can be made by OFCOM (or similarly regulated) licensed radio stations (including BBC, commercial, community, hospital and student radio stations), BBC production units, independent production companies and/or producers, internet stations and broadcasters, podcasters and BFBS.

In addition, please note that:
- All entries must be authorised by the entrant's Station Manager/Company Director, or person of similar seniority.
- If you are an independent production company or producer you will need authorisation from the broadcasting station and confirmation of the transmission date of the programme entered.

This category is for all types of music programme broadcast on a daily, weekly or monthly basis.
Judges will be looking at the whole programme and seeking to reward outstanding music and speech content, sequences, feature items and presentation.
Judges’ Tip…
“Don’t lose sight of the fact that this is a music category; winning entries are normally ones which show that the presenter has a passion for the music they are playing and an eagerness to share with the audience the tracks on their show. Entries which simply showcase links which seek to amuse and entertain, with no sense that they exist in an environment of music and no feeling that the music is important, are less likely to succeed.”

This category is for programmes broadcast on a daily, weekly or monthly basis that deserve particular recognition for their entertainment value. Although not designed for comedy programmes, this category is for programmes which may contain comedic links.
Judges will be looking at the whole programme and seeking to reward the entertaining elements within it, acknowledging the skill with which they are devised, produced and delivered.
Please note that programmes entered into either of the Breakfast Show of the Year categories will not be eligible in this category.
Judges’ Tip…
“Don’t wait until the nineteenth minute of your audio submission to wow the judges; do it right from the start and grab our attention! Another tip – when you’ve put the submission together, get someone who wasn’t involved in putting the entry together to have a listen – a fresh pair of ears can give you just the perspective you need.”

This category is for speech-based programmes broadcast on a daily, weekly or monthly basis.
Judges will be looking at the whole programme and seeking to reward outstanding content and presentation that engages its target audience.
Please note that news focused programmes have their own category (A7).
Judges’ Tip…
“When putting your audio together, think about the ‘wow’ factor, look for it and make sure you include it. These Awards are not for consistent and appreciated programmes – they’re for outstanding broadcasting. Also, use the written blurb to give the judges a context. They are all experienced, but they don’t know the schedule of every station and, more importantly, they don’t know the background to every programme and presenter. Make sure there’s just enough information to allow the judges to put the piece into perspective (i.e the listener’s perspective).”

Judges will be looking at the whole programme and seeking to reward outstanding content and presentation that informs and engages the target audience.

“When putting your audio together, don’t focus on the maximum duration, think only about submitting your very best bits… If you’ve done that 20 minutes in, then stop. Sometimes less really is more!”

This category is for any news or current affairs focused programme broadcast on a daily, weekly or monthly basis.
Judges will be looking at the whole programme and seeking to reward outstanding content and presentation that delivers relevant and informed journalism to the target audience.
Judges’ Tip…
“The best entries always show a strong mix of content - interviews, location material, features and lively presenting. It’s also worth remembering that this category isn’t about recognising the strength of a single presenter or a single interview – it’s the programme as a whole that the judges are interested in. Don't feel that it is only the big 'wow' stories that will impress the judges - quality treatment of bread and butter news that is well targeted at its audience is just as likely ( if not more likely ) to impress.”

This category is for coverage of a scheduled live event. Typical examples might include a music concert, a state occasion or a sporting event.
Judges will be looking at the way in which entrants have used the techniques of radio to convey the essence and experience of the event to those who are not present. Judges will also pay attention to the launch of and build up to the event, where relevant.
Judges’ Tip…
“This category is full to the brim with a huge range of events, treatments and budgets. What makes an entry stand out is how well targeted the storytelling is for its intended audience and how well the event is brought to life for those listening. Tell the judges who your audience is and let your audio show the judges how well you served them.”

The judges will be seeking to reward compelling and powerful programming that has made an impact in, for example, fundraising, heightening public awareness and understanding of an issue, and/or inspiring change within a community.
Judges’ Tip…
“This category always attracts a broad range of entries so it’s important that entrants know their subject, have told their story to its best effect and are able to stand out from the crowd. Key questions to ask before submitting - Why is what we have done special? How good is the audio in telling the story? How different is it from what everyone else is likely to enter? Also, spare a thought for the trees sacrificed when submitting supporting materials and remember that the written stuff will never persuade the judges over the audio.”

Please note that entrants must choose to enter either Music Radio Personality of the Year or Music Broadcaster of the Year, not both.
Judges’ Tip…
Things that work well in this category are entertainment value, range, and creativity. Presenters who instinctively understand what will hold the interest of the target listener and who draw them into the content will always stand out. So will presenters who can show more than one side to their style, and who try things or say things which are memorable and new."

Judges will be looking to reward outstanding broadcasters who skilfully share their specialist knowledge of and enthusiasm for music with their target audience in an informative and engaging way.
Please note that entrants must choose to enter either Music Broadcaster of the Year or Music Personality of the Year, not both.
Judges’ Tip…
“Don’t forget that this award is for the best music broadcaster - that means that engagement with the music is critical. If the music is incidental, that won’t be a winning entry. Big name guest bookings won’t necessarily impress the judges either – whether it’s Paul McCartney or Robbie Williams, it’s a star performance we’re looking for, not a star.”

This category is for personality/information led broadcasters/presenters of speech-based programming where more than 50% of the programme output is speech. Presenter duos may also enter here.
Judges will be looking to reward outstanding individuals who deserve particular recognition for their overall presentation style, understanding of their subject matter, their personality or exceptional knowledge and authority and/or their rapport with the target audience.
Judges’ Tip…
“Take some time to stand back from your entry and listen with a fresh pair of ears to ensure it really reflects the broadcaster’s very best. As much as judges want to hear programmes as a listener would hear them, they are not atypical listeners because they are carrying out comparisons. Keep that thought in mind when you’re choosing your clips. Also, beware of name-dropping for the sake of it. Just because you had the Pope on a programme doesn’t mean you’ll automatically impress the judges - unless some great audio came out of it.”

This category is designed to recognise excellence in paid-for promotional, sponsored or brand funded programming on radio stations.
Entries should be from a single campaign and can encompass a range of activities, such as competition elements and programme sponsorship.
Judges will be looking to reward entries that successfully address the needs or interests of the brand, as well as the expectations of the audience and the goals of the radio station’s programmers to create compelling content.
Judges’ Tip…
“This category is all about the idea and how well it is executed. It really is as simple as that. Judges don’t need acres of complex material to wade through. Strip it back to basics – less volume and more focus on the core idea and how that serves both the brand and the audience.”

This category is designed to recognise creative excellence in a series or campaign of pre-produced commercials or station branded promos/ trailers that promote a product or programming, either on behalf of a third party client or a station.
Judges will consider how well the audio communicates the campaign's objectives; how radio's unique attributes have been harnessed throughout the campaign, and the creative linkage between different elements of the campaign.
Although the judges’ focus will be on the audio, entrants may also submit evidence of the campaign’s use of other media.
Judges’ Tip…
“Remember that this category is not designed to recognise promotion within programming time of a station or station-supported event; the promos/commercials must be stand alone and pre-produced. Also, as with all the Sony award categories, it is the audio that is being judged and not the product, station, competition or promotion that is being advertised/promoted.”

This category is for on-air competitions.
Judges will be seeking to reward competitions that demonstrate outstanding creativity, innovation, audience participation and radio production techniques.
Judges’ Tip…
“Judges are not only interested in the mechanic here; endeavour to show the overall entertainment value of the competition – the skill of the presenters, the humour, the emotion and the quality of production. Stand-out entries almost always demonstrate excellence in all these areas. In a category where a number of entries are executing the same type of idea in a slightly different way, judges welcome something that is new, fresh or original. Ask yourself what’s going to stand in this entry and what will make it memorable.”

This category is designed to recognise excellence in the creation of an overall ‘sound’ for a station or network.
The judges will be seeking to reward the creative and effective use of production tools such as liners, jingles, promos and trailers, in establishing and promoting a distinctive on-air station/network identity.
Judges’ Tip…
“Make sure your audio contains examples of all different kinds of production and don’t forget to include a running order. That will make the judges’ lives much easier when it comes to discussing specifics and re-listening.”

This category is for a feature, special or documentary style programme that focuses specifically on a musical topic or event. This is likely to be a one-off programme or a limited-run series.

Judges will be looking to reward outstanding examples of production (where appropriate), creativity and presentation.
Judges’ Tip…
“Put yourself in the minds of the judges, who may or may not have heard of you or your station. Making sure the first few minutes of your entry blows them away is vital. Sometimes, as the producer, you may be too close to the programme to judge, so get someone else to listen, as this is one of those occasions where you really do only have one shot to make a first impression.”

This category is for a feature, special or documentary style programme that focuses on topical and/or news orientated issues. This is likely to be a one-off programme or a limited-run series.
Please note that daily/weekly news/topical programmes have their own categories and should not be entered here. One-off specials of daily/weekly programmes may be submitted provided they are clearly different to the programme’s usual output.
Judges will be looking to recognise programmes that have their basis in journalism and reward outstanding production (where appropriate) and analysis.
Judges' Tip...
"This award honours the very best in British radio journalism. Entries should offer something unique. They need to go beyond the day-to-day news agenda, exposing issues behind the headlines and unearthing stories that haven't been told before. The best entries have strong production values and original treatments that make them must-listen pieces."

Judges’ Tip…
“Audience feedback is interesting for judges to have. Critical feedback is good too. Be wary however of including commissioner feedback, especially on its own without audience or critical feedback. Sometimes, one commissioner can be quoted on half a dozen entries and no judge likes to be told what to think!”

This category is for any programme or individual performance in which the primary objective is to make listeners laugh. This could be a one-off programme, a limited run series or a regularly scheduled programme.
Judges will be looking to reward programmes that can demonstrate the skill of comedy in both its writing and overall delivery or performance.
Judges’ Tip…
“This can be a broad category with a wide range of entries but as judges, we always find it easy to agree on what we’re looking for. In fact, it’s really rather simple. We want to hear things that make us laugh. Creativity and good production are important, but above all else, it has to be funny. If it won't make us laugh, don't enter it - but if you think it will, please do. We need a laugh.”

This category celebrates the production of all types of radio drama, from series or serials and one-off plays, through to straightforward readings.
Judges will be looking to reward outstanding dramas that are well-written and performed, providing a ‘must listen’ for their intended audience.
Judges’ Tip…
“As judges we’re interested in the storytelling - but it’s more about the telling than the story; we’d rather hear an ordinary story told wonderfully than a wonderful story told ordinarily. How the drama has dealt with the absence of visuals is key as that’s what makes a good radio drama great.”

This category recognises the contribution that multiplatform, social media, apps and other platforms make to enrich and extend the listening experience.
Entries are invited from publishers and producers of radio station websites, services delivered to mobile or other platforms, operators of pop-up brand extensions or social media specialists.
Judges will be seeking to reward entries that make effective use of their chosen medium, but most of all will be seeking evidence that in using these tools, entrants produce great radio that enhances the listener’s experience.
Judges’ Tip…
“Entrants should be aware that this is not a technology award. Like all the other categories in the Sony Radio Academy Awards, judges are looking to reward outstanding audio. Services must therefore be directly related to radio station output and entries will be judged on the strength of the audio submission the multiplatform activity is supporting and not the other way around.”
What to do next…
All entries must be completed and submitted online. Please refer to Make an Entry for further details.
To be considered for this award, you’ll need to complete an entry form and upload the following audio:
ONE MP3 (up to 55MB) containing as-broadcast evidence of the radio output relating to the multiplatform activity. This may be edited for time, and may be a compilation of programming output. Audio must not exceed 30 minutes in duration.
If your audio is a compilation, you’ll be asked to list the running order of extracts on the entry form.
Additional audio material such as specially recorded voice links or introductions is not permitted.
In addition to the above, for this category we also ask that you supply:
4 hard copies (in 4 separate and clearly labelled A4 envelopes) of supporting evidence of the multiplatform activity. This may include screenshots, details or a demonstration of the service, printed material including screenshots, USB keys or DVDs.

This category is for stations with a potential adult listenership, published TSA or editorial coverage under 300,000.
Judges will be seeking to reward stations that can demonstrate how they have excelled across the year and provided essential listening for their target audience.
Please note: No entry is required as stations previously selected as regional winners in The Radio Academy’s Nations & Regions Awards will be put forward for this category.
This process will be automatic and no re-submission of material is required.
This category is for stations with a potential adult listenership, published TSA or editorial coverage of 300,000 to 1 million.
Judges will be seeking to reward stations that can demonstrate how they have excelled across the year and provided essential listening for their target audience. While the audio will be the primary determining factor, judges will also take into account RAJAR information, consistency of programming and clarity of the station’s purpose and feel. Entrants will be prompted to supply this information on the entry form.
Stations must have been broadcasting for a minimum of 12 months from 1st January 2012.
Please note that radio stations can opt to be judged collectively as a brand/network and as individual stations according to their TSA. Separate entry forms and audio uploads should be submitted for each category entered.
Judges’ Tip…
“Station of the Year entries that can convey a clear sense of the station's identity throughout the entire audio are the ones that tend to stand out. This is not a category where just putting together a compilation of your best bits is enough. You need to convey to the judges that the station has a clear sound and dynamic that runs through each segment of the entry. The written element is also important to explain what the station has achieved. More than anything, clear evidence that the station understands the audience it is targeting and has done so successfully should be an aim for any entry.”
What to do next…
All entries must be completed and submitted online. Please refer to Make an Entry for further details.
To be considered for this award, you’ll need to complete an entry form and upload the following audio:
ONE MP3 ‘BEST OF’ 2012 COMPILATION (up to 55 MB) to consist of a minimum of 6 examples of the station’s best output during 2012 (lasting no longer than 45 minutes in total). You should endeavour to demonstrate the breadth and range of your output in these examples.

This category is for stations with a potential adult listenership, published TSA or editorial coverage of 1 million plus.
Please refer to Make an Entry for further details .
You will be asked to itemise the running order of extracts on the entry form.
Please note that telescoping in and out of music tracks, ad breaks and promos is permitted. All other content should be included in full, as broadcast.

This new award is for stations broadcasting to at least 50% of the UK population on FM, AM, DAB or a combination of any of the three.
It is designed to recognise the emergence of radio ‘brands’ across the UK. While the Station of the Year categories focus primarily on the content between the songs, this award will judge the overall sound/mood of the station against its stated marketing and programming brand statements.
In addition, the judges will consider how a particular brand has excelled across the year and provided essential listening for their target audience/demographic. While the audio will be the primary determining factor, RAJAR information, consistency of programming and clarity of the station’s purpose will also be taken into account.
Where relevant and appropriate, the brand should also demonstrate how it has served its advertisers/partners, effectively delivering on their objectives without compromising or diluting the potency or clarity of the radio brand in the process.
To enter this category, the brand must have been broadcasting for a minimum of 12 months from 1st January 2012.
Please note that stations can enter UK Station of the Year and UK Radio Brand of the Year. Entering one does not rule out entering the other.
What to do next …
All entries must be completed and submitted online. Please refer to Make an Entry for further details.
While no audio submission is required for this category, the judges will spend time listening to the output in real time from all entering stations. Entrants will also need to complete a detailed entry form.
